Google's AI Futures Fund and Accel launched the Atoms AI Cohort 2026 — an accelerator specifically for Indian and Indian-origin founders building real AI companies. They received 4,000+ applications and selected just 5. Each winner gets up to $2 million in co-investment plus $350K in compute credits from Google Cloud and DeepMind.
Accel partner Prayank Swaroop told TechCrunch that roughly 70% of rejected applications were "wrappers" — startups that just put a chatbot UI on top of an existing model without reimagining any workflow. The rest got cut for being in crowded, undifferentiated categories: marketing automation, AI recruitment tools, nothing defensible.
What made it through? Startups rebuilding entire workflows from scratch. Real infrastructure. Hard problems with no obvious shortcut.
